NIST is a self-compliance framework whereas CMMC requires third-party audit and certification. NIST compliance is a good start and will help prepare organizations to upgrade to the CMMC.

No. The framework specifies five levels of progressive cybersecurity maturity. It is estimated that most contracts will require Level 1 to Level 3, but it depends on the type of goods and services being provided.
The CMMC framework is already in use. The first version of the framework was released on January 31, 2020, and the first round of RFIs to include CMMC specifications were released in September 2020.
